Well worth the price... November 17, 2006 Confounded Consumer 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I've been a fan of Bluetooth headsets since they've arrived. Not having to worry about a draw-pull or gear-shift yanking my headset out is reason enough to make the switch from corded.
br /
br /I have owned Jabra, Motorola, and until now only corded Plantronics. The Plantronics Discovery 655 is the first Bluetooth headset that meets all the criteria I've added over the years for a great headset:
br / - Has to be lightweight and "vanish" on/in your ear... You shouldn't know it's there until a call comes in. =The 655 sits perfectly on my ear with just the gel earpiece. For those wanting/needing the extra assurance that it won't literally vanish, an ear-loop is included.
br / - Must have just the required buttons. Volume, and on/off, are the only requisites for a headset. Anything else is a frill I'd rather not pay for or have to worry about. =The 655 keeps it simple.
br / - My transmitted voice must sound like a corded land-line on the other end. =My callers are suprised I'm on a wireless headset.
br / - Reception must be crystal. =It definitely is.
br / - Must use standard USB charging. =The 655 gives you an option of proprietary outlet charging, battery, or USB charging. This is not "too many charging parts" as someone mentioned... rather Plantronics offers a multitude of charging options. Only one is required at a time -- your choice.
br / - It must hold a charge. =The 655 doesn't quite last as long as my Jabra, perhaps due to the DSP functionality (which uses power), however, there is a power-save mode to extend uptime if necessary, as well as an included emergency battery option for a quick charge, if no other options are available (such as no laptop or no outlet).
br / - Price must be right. =If the 655 was more than $70, I would have paid it.
br /
br / Bottom line, it's well worth the price, and then some. I am continually looking for newer/better technology to simplify my life. The 655 does that... (until I find something better).
655 DSP works well with Cingular 8525 December 14, 2006 Tester (Maryland) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
In light of several of the reviews, I was somewhat concerned about the 655, but decided to purchase it anyway. The 655 DSP that I received was either redesigned or some reviewers were describing a different model. The device I received fits very securely in its charger case; it lights up and vibrates to indicate a proper fit. I had no problem keeping the device in its charger. The device was very comfortable to wear, and did indeed stay securely in my ear when moving about (without the ear loop attachment, which I have not tried). Some reviewers complained about the USB adapter. I had no problem with it; it snaps into the charger base, and does not fall out. The device needed to be charged (this was expected and it took about 3 hours, in line with the manual instuctions). The device paired effortlessly with my Cingular 8525 (the process took less than a minute). Call quality was quite good (although I only used it from my car and my office (quiet locations), reception was clear and sufficiently loud in both directions. There is a very slight delay (1 second or so) between incoming calls being received by my handset and the call being relayed to the device. In practice, I could not answer the phone fast enough to beat the device's receipt of the relayed signal. Frankly, the 655 DSP worked better than I had expected, and I very much recommend it.
Plantronics 655 DSP Headset is state-of-the-art April 6, 2007 John R. Gilmer (Manhattan Beach, CA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I use my phone constantly while driving AND have a moderate high frequency hearing loss. The 655 DSP is perfect for both. It works seamlessly as it is advertised to do. It fits my ear without the wire hook and stays all day. It is so light I totally forget I have it in. The earmold design is very efficient in delivering sound to the audio canal. I usually push it in as I recieve a call but that is not really necessary. The sound quality it delivers is VERY GOOD. I understand as well as with my $1800 hearing aid (that I remove in favor of the 655 DSP). Battery charge life is excellent. The controls work just fine (I had to get used to them). I totall recommend this unit. It surpasses the other 2 units I have used by around 250% or more.
excellent in every way January 23, 2008 David Black (Oklahoma City, OK USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Using this headset with my Nokia 6126, the other party hears my voice just as clearly as when I speak directly into my phone. They can't tell any difference and I can hear the other party, even better. There's no static, hissing or buzzing as long as the phone is within a couple of feet of the headset and mostly unobstructed (desk or shirt pocket: good, pants pocket: not so good).
br /
br /The gel earpiece is comfortable and snug. Sometimes I don't even use the removable ear hook (unless I'm moving around a lot).
br /
br /All the charging options (AC adapter, USB power, or AA battery sleeve) are great but I normally just keep my headset in the AC adapter sleeve when not in use. I spoke with Plantronics tech support and they said it was OK to do that because there's an automatic shutoff feature that prevents over-charging. Tech support spoke English as a primary language (at least the person I spoke with). They were friendly, knowledgeable, and didn't keep me waiting.
br /
br /I don't write many reviews but this product is exceptional. I highly recommend it.
Lightweight Wonder November 11, 2006 A. D. Ladner (Gulf Stream, Florida USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've been waiting to purchase a bluetooth headset for a while, and I finally "bit". I have had no problems, and it is functioning exactly as expected!
br /Paired with Moto Razr V3, first try, no problems.
br /Sound is good, louder than the (awful) speakerphone, even when the window is down in the car. Voice dialing is no worse than without the headset (unreliable), more a problem with motorola's speech recognition than the headset.
br /Fit is good and VERY comfortable (I wear glasses), I barely notice it in my ear. Stability in the ear is good without the earloop.
br /Range seems to be as expected (I got 42' in a parking lot), but I did not test it at my home [where even WiFi 802.11h gets only 30' :( ].
br /Love the mini-usb charging adapter, only have to keep one charger in my car. All of life should be so simple.
br /Overall, a strong recommend!
